about

It’s been a while coming, but Adelaide ska punks Son of Dad are very excited to release their debut album ‘The Best Life’, containing 12 tracks of upbeat third-wave ska and punk rock with hints of old-school 2-tone and traditional skinhead reggae. It’s a bit of a mixed-bag of all ska sub-genres for fans of Less Than Jake and The Aggrolites alike.

‘The Best Life’ captures the fast, horn-driven anthems of the band’s early years, but also contains plenty of laid back summertime tunes with acoustic guitars, organs, harmonica and ukulele, not to mention guest vocals by Nina from buddies Hightime on the track ‘I Won’t Leave’.

Get in touch if you'd like to buy a copy of the CD.

Track Name: Chain Letter
Can’t help think that I could’ve been better
Another link in another chain letter
Regret the debt from an old jet-setter
One old man in an even older sweater

20 seconds from the outset’s long enough to see
My much maligned and mistimed mindset coming back to me
And I can’t take it anymore
Another 20 on the floor
It’s gonna stay that way

17 years at a desk so I could learn to be
Another 17 years older watching re-runs on TV
And I can’t take it anymore
Another 20 on the floor
It’s gonna stay that way
Track Name: Upper and Under Hands
Well I don’t wanna spend my life
Chasing cars and idolising stars
So I’ll stick to what I know, ‘cause I know that I’m more than this
Take it slow and reminisce

Well I just wanna live my life
And commit to sorting out my shit
When the end only means there’s the means for a friend
you’ll get found out in the end

And I, I’ll dedicate my life
To understand the upper and under hands
The activity’s been noted and crossed from a list
I’ll bite my lips and clench my fist
Track Name: Thames The Breaks
Let’s take some time to figure out
Where we are right now
And what we’d do for anybody
Let’s think why we’re so fucked up
And why we’re out of luck
And why we don’t have any money

I think I think our time has come
Let’s drink and drink until it’s fun
Until the early hours of the morning
We’ll have a smoke, we’ll have that drink
Take some drugs to help us not think
Why the hell we do it so well, oh well...

Remember those things we said
Remember were we so bad
Remember how we needed each other
Were out habits all that wrong
But it took so god dammed long
And I can’t take it after you’re gone

And you never had the best intentions
We can’t even figure out what’s happening
You’re eyes are shut your tongue is tied
It’s like you’re fucking dumb and blind
At the perfect time

And I just wanna scream now, the walls are caving in now
And I could live the best life without you
And I just wanna breathe now, but you’re holding me down now
And I could live the best life without you
Track Name: I Won't Leave
When I first saw you it was from the back
Your T-shirt white and your hair jet black
Some band was playing, couldn’t tell you who it was
I think I liked them ‘cause you liked them and that was reason enough

When I first saw you standing next to me
I thought I knew the kind of guy you’d be, but
Curious eyes met mine and it all became too much
I couldn’t help myself but help myself and reach for your touch

Still can’t believe that you’re close to me and that you’re here to stay,
So tell me once again that you won’t leave (I won’t leave)
I looked around and found you next to me, I know you’re here to stay
Just tell me once again that you won’t leave (I won’t leave)

I never thought you’d think I was your type
I never thought you’d get me so uptight
I never thought I could never get enough
I never thought that I could ever want to be in love this much
Track Name: Lo-Fi
The beats on my stereo barely make a sound
The beats on my stereo...

I can’t describe just how I’m feeling the feeling of music soothes the soul
Nobody told me, nobody told me this is how to make it low
What you hear ain’t always a given, the LPs you get at the local shows
So come on with me, sing along to the lo-fi beats on my stereo

If you’ve got the time, I’ve got the place
Bring on over your old demo tapes
4 track roots rocksteady ska
And we don’t care about how it sounds

What you hear ain’t always a gimmick the hiss and pop of cassette tapes
One more time hit the rewind button, there’s no room for second takes
Nobody told me, nobody told me this ain’t how to make it low
So come on with me, sing along to the lo-fi beats on my stereo
Track Name: Subtext
Without my favourite songs to stop me from going wrong
I think that I would go around the bend
Trying to make a mark I marked it off the chart
And felt that I was selling out again
Yeah I felt that I was selling out again

Without my favourite tunes helping clean my room
I know I would be driven to despair
What kind of life is this, good and bad, hit and miss
but music makes it all seem fair
Yeah music makes it all seem fair

Woah, it’s picking up my soul,
It’s the one thing I know

Nothing is constant but music is solid, holds my feet firmly to the ground
With everything shifting a moving and drifting
A melody can always be found
yeah a melody can always be found
Track Name: Turned Out Today
Ever had one of those days when nothing much happens
Can only speak for myself when I say I live them everyday
Not through lack of trying but I’m dying ‘cos I’m a repeating pattern
And god only knows that I don’t want to waste life away

Question answers I’ve heard before
And I’ll never know for sure
A trade off I’ve got down pat
And I guess we’ll just have to see about that

Don’t know where you’ve been sourcing your misinformation
But I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out today

Now I’d collect a reward for returning something that’s missing
But I’d like to think I could say I’d done it any way
And I realise nice guys never get recognition
So who would have thought I’d enjoy living my life this way

Don’t know if I’ll ever understand civilisation
But I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out today
Track Name: Mother Was Right
Well I thought you were the one
So I took my time, I guess mother was right about this one
And when it’s all, all said and done
Well I’m wasting away, fighting off grey over nothing

And so I say it and I say it yeah I’ll say it to you
The deal got bad before the night was through
And so I say it and I say it yeah I’ll say it to you
I guess mother was right and now nothing’s alright anyway

It didn’t surprise when you went away
‘Cause it’s happened before, we hurt the ones we adore over nothing
No second chance, just second best
And so I guess, you couldn’t care less about something
Track Name: Mr Warden
Mr. Warden, turn out the lights
Mr. Warden, turn out the lights
Oh warden won’t you turn you the lights so I can sleep tonight
So I can’t sleep tonight

Been spending 24 hours a day locked up in my room
Judge and jury done and put me away for a crime I swear I did not do
I know you know that I miss my kids and I sure as hell miss my wife
So go and be a good warden now and turn off all the cell block lights

Been staring at these four walls now for so god dammed long
My parole keeps being delayed and it’s wrong, so wrong
Single beds and single file is not the life for me
My eyes are tired and my head is heavy, so turn off all the cell lights please

Now the warden’s turned out the lights
Now the warden’s turned out the lights
Thank god the warden’s turned out the lights cos I’m breaking out tonight
Track Name: Something Snapped
Well it wasn’t your fault
I just thought I’d let you know
That something snapped, we can’t go back
To the places we used to go
I just thought I’d let you know

Out in the city when the nights are long
That’s dumb and done another summer come and gone
So stupid skirts should stop the string along
Not because it’s not becoming but because it’s wrong
One, two, you’re feeling fine
Now get your act together maybe try next time
And now the prophecy’s coming true
I said I’d help you

Let’s get this out in the open air
This love affair had fallen into disrepair
Handle with care stickers everywhere
Not because you really need them but because they’re there
Three, four, whatcha staring for
Now You know you’re getting big because the big they fall
And now the prophecy’s coming true
I said I’d help you
Track Name: Let Her Go
Sometimes you know I cry myself to sleep
For you, for you I weep
And well, you got my head out of my shell
For you, I tripped and fell

But I’m not gonna waste more time
And I’m not gonna sit and cry
That would be impolite so I’ll let her go

Sometimes, you know I find it hard to take
For you, my body aches
And well, your inspiration to excel
It served, it served me well

Sometimes, I’d like to think you’ve got my back
For you, you’re all attack
And tell, yeah tell your friends what you will
I hope you sleep tonight I know I will
Track Name: What You Wish
Well some people change some stay the same
If all goes well we can’t complain but,
We don’t care about anything, woah
You spent four years with your head in a book
Why not take some time, take a look around
At what you missed and what’s the same
Not that it really matters now anyway

The more things change, the less I care
The less I care about you, yeah
The more things change, the less I care
The less i care about you

So you got your own little world
Where you won’t go out unless you’re told what to do
What to think and what to see, woah
When you finally get outta here, tell me you think
‘Cause I’d love to hear what you missed
What you’ve seen and where you’ve been
‘Cause you won’t come back again (won’t come back again)
Won’t come back again, won’t come back

The more things change, the less I care
The less I care about you, yeah
The more things change, the less I care
The less I care about you

Tell me what you wish you’d been, tell me what you wish you’d been
